Your need-to-know guide to the Melbourne Cupalcoholic

Whether you’re based in Melbourne or anywhere else in Australia, the excitement is always palpable around Melbourne Cup race time. Every year, Australians come together to celebrate the most popular horse race on the calendar, the Melbourne Cup – and while it’s a public holiday in Victoria, it’s the race that stops the nation as people all around the country make a day of it. Here are all the details you need to know.

When does the Melbourne Cup race start?

The Melbourne Cup itself was started back in 1861, and is held on the first Tuesday in November each year. **In 2022, this will be on the 1st of November. **(Fun fact: the Cup has always been run on the first Tuesday in November since 1875, but from 1861 to 1875 it was held on a Thursday. To fit in at the best time with the rest of the four-day Spring Carnival, the Cup was moved to Tuesdays).

There are 10 races on the day, with the Melbourne Cup race start time at 3pm. Up until 2005 it was run just after 3pm local time, but it’s since been brought forward to 3pm on the dot.

Picking a Melbourne Cup winner

The Melbourne Cup is the world’s richest handicap and the world’s richest 3200-metre horse race.

Even for people who don’t regularly bet, taking a punt is a popular activity on Melbourne Cup Day, with hundreds of millions of dollars being wagered on the one race each year. Place your bets through a bookmaker online or in person – or setting up sweeps at your office or a Melbourne Cup function is just as much fun.

The prize pool is over $8 million, with the Melbourne Cup winner taking home over an impressive $4 million and a trophy worth $250,000, and the owners raking in a $500,000 bonus. Makybe Diva is the most successful horse ever at the Melbourne Cup, galloping off with the win three times (2003, 2004 and 2005).

It can be a tough winner to pick: whether you do your research and take into account factors such as the horse’s previous wins, weight, the track condition, and jockey skill; you’re allocated a horse in the office sweepstake; or you simply take a punt on one because you like the sound of the name – no one knows for sure, so the aim of the day is to have fun with a bit of a thrill along the way.

Melbourne Cup race times

As always, the headline event is the Melbourne Cup race itself, however, there are actually ten races scheduled across the course of the day. Most of them are run at roughly 40-minute intervals, although the race prior to the Melbourne Cup is run at 2pm to allow for the introduction of the 24 jockeys and horses who will compete for the Cup, and the next race after the Cup isn’t run until 4pm to ensure plenty of time for celebrations, congratulations (and champagne) after the iconic main event.

It’s a full day of races on Melbourne Cup Day at Flemington – the first taking place just after 10.30am local time, the Melbourne Cup race start time at 3pm, and the last race just after 5pm local time. It can be a long day, whether you’re at Flemington Racecourse or cheering on from a Melbourne Cup function, so it pays to make sure you’re well-fed along the way!

I brought the ALL DAY GRAZING PLATTER for MOTHERS DAY! Honestly, it was absolutely delicious, between Mum and myself we managed to almost finish it within 8 hrs. Highly recommended 👌 as this company are truly amazing, 🙌 without a doubt the prices are reasonable, the amount of food and variety with these platters are brilliant 👏. What the helly? Ordered 2 fruit platter for a funeral, says serves 3-5 people, the small one. Deceiving photo on website, they use the big platter for the small one as well. In the package i received like 1 orange, 1 kiwi, 1 grape vine and 1 passion fruit, That's max 5 dollars. for 52 dollars and plus 45 dollars delivery, PURE ROBBERY ! I fully regret buying it.

The plated sit down package was so delicious! CP looked after dietary needs of my guests, Chef finalised the plating in our kitchen, waiter was excellent and they cleaned up afterwards! It made our experience quite memorable. We host for our stakeholders every year. Always exceptional food. Thank you CP Team!

For corporate or event catering in Sydney, CP offer reliable delivery, excellent presentation, and good dietary flexibility. Pricing sits on the higher end but the quality justifies it. Worth a call.

In a world of generic party platters, this catering is a total game-changer. I recently used them for a gathering and was blown away by the balance of whimsy and high-end culinary execution. The hot cross buns were pillowy and perfectly spiced, but the real showstopper was the presentation—it felt less like a 'delivery' and more like a curated Easter garden on my table. If you want to actually enjoy your own party instead of sweating in the kitchen, this is the gold standard.

Highly recommended - catering ALWAYS on time, even to Sydney CBD, hot insulated packs supplied for hot food. And always high quality. Treats are so special.

Christine Marsden 25/03/2026

Reliable, predictable and on time. You couldn't want more from a caterer. Especially as they also cater for dietary requirements perfectly.

I’ve been to my fair share of office events where the highlight is… leaving early. Not this time. Catering Project Sydney completely raised the bar. The food was next-level—fresh, beautifully presented, and dangerously easy to keep going back for “just one more” (I lost count around five). And the service? Seamless. The team made everything feel effortless, like they’d quietly mastered the art of being everywhere at once without ever being intrusive. If this is office catering now, I suddenly have a lot more enthusiasm for work events.

We had a school reunion event and the catering Project boxes were perfect! We were able to put them out straight on the table without having to transfer them onto to our own platters, which made it so easy and they looked and tasted beautiful

Delicious and well-presented food, and they have many options to choose from. The only issue is that they brought our order a little over an hour early. Since we work on a university campus, we were on the opposite side of campus and had to stop working early to get to the location of our meeting. Better early than late, though. Would recommend to anyone.

Food was absolutely delicious, service and delivery was great. Only thing important to note is the cost is huge for the amount of food you get. $600 for two sandwich platters, one kids ham and cheese platter, sushi and fruit platter. The quantity in each platter is quite small for what you pay. Just something to note if you wish to order!

Catering Project is outstanding! Their service is super reliable, friendly, and professional. The team goes above and beyond to make every event seamless and help with getting things right and done at times with a vety short turn around time! Their catering options are excellent - delicious, beautifully presented, and perfectly tailored. I couldn’t recommend them more highly. Thanks Bianca!
